Porsche 917 K Martini Racing

Martini Racing, backed by the renowned Italian distillery Martini & Rossi, became a true symbol of excellence in motorsport, thanks to its distinctive dark blue, light blue, and red stripes that adorned the white or silver bodies of their cars. Founded in 1958 as the Martini International Club by Count Metello Rossi di Montelera, Martini’s sponsorship program gained prominence in the 1970s, especially during the World Sportscar Championship. In 1971, Martini Racing truly made its mark when Porsche moved its second factory-backed team under Martini’s banner, running alongside the Gulf Racing JWA team—a partnership that became legendary.

At the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1971, the Porsche 917 K Martini Racing, driven by Gérard Larrousse and Vic Elford, delivered a stellar performance. As part of the World Sportscar Championship, Sebring was one of the toughest endurance races, pushing both drivers and machines to their limits. The Porsche 917 K, with its flat-12 engine, was a powerhouse capable of incredible speeds while maintaining the durability needed for the grueling race.

Adorned in its iconic Martini Racing livery, the 917 K faced fierce competition but emerged as a standout, proving Porsche’s dominance in endurance racing. The combination of power, cutting-edge engineering, and unmistakable design left a lasting impression. Despite mechanical issues that sometimes threatened the team’s chances at Sebring, Larrousse and Elford showcased remarkable resilience and skill, ensuring the 917 K shone on the track. This performance not only added to Porsche’s storied legacy but also cemented Martini Racing as a key player in the world of motorsport.

The partnership between Martini Racing and Porsche, exemplified by the 917 K, extended far beyond Sebring. Together, they achieved numerous victories and memorable performances across various circuits, making Martini’s stripes a symbol of success. Sebring 1971 remains one of the most iconic representations of this collaboration, where raw speed, style, and innovation came together to define a golden era in motorsport history.
